See privacy policy.An American Airlines flight Monday made an emergency return to its gate shortly after takeoff, citing a strong odor of smoke in the cockpit. The source of the odor was unknown as of the time of publication.AA Flight 1060, a Boeing 737-800 carrying 149 passengers and 6 flight crew, departed for Newark (EWR) from Miami (MIA) at 8:36am on Feb. 4, but turned around almost immediately after takeoff, safely landing back at MIA at 9:10am.“Two pilots and three flight attendants requested medical attention, and one flight attendant asked to be taken to the hospital as a precaution,” an American Airlines spokesperson told TPG. “No passengers requested medical attention. The aircraft is also being evaluated by our maintenance team.” The airline assigned a different aircraft to the flight, which re-departed at 12:55 pm and arrived in Newark at 4:08 pm. American Airlines subsequently reported that all of their crew members were given a clean bill of health.This is the second incident of its kind within one week. JetBlue Flight 198 departing Orlando on January 30 had to return to its original airport as well, also because of fumes entering the cockpit.
