Now, even travelers just passing through Narita International Airport (NRT) will get to experience the country’s high-tech toilet culture with a quick visit to the restroom.Earlier this month, the airport installed tiny rolls of toilet paper for travelers’ smartphones in 86 bathroom stalls — right next to the regular roll of TP. According to an article by The Guardian, this unexpected luxury comes courtesy of telecommunications company NTT Docomo, with each sheet — in addition to welcoming the user to Japan — explaining (in English) how to connect to the airport’s Wi-Fi and install its travel guide app.Image courtesy of JT Genter.While it may seem like a very kitschy, Instagram-ready photo op, the reason behind the smartphone wipes is real: recent studies have shown that a smartphone screen is likely to have five times as many germs on it than a toilet seat.Image courtesy of JT Genter.You can see more in the video below, but if you want to check them out in person, you’d better book a flight now.
