Delta Air Lines wants to buy Alitalia, the bankrupt, money-losing Italian flag carrier that’s up for sale — or at least a part of it.According to Italian news agency Ansa, the government received on Wednesday three separate offers to buy Alitalia. One came from Delta, another from UK-based low-cost airline EasyJet, and a third from state-owned Italian railway company Ferrovie dello Stato or FS.In response to a request for comment on the bid, a Delta spokesperson emailed TPG saying only that “We continue to explore ways to work with Alitalia and maintain our partnership in the future....

In the last five months, the Boeing 737 MAX 8 has been involved in two crashes involving brand-new airplanes, with the deaths of 346 people combined.On October 29 last year, Lion Air flight JT610 crashed just 12 minutes after takeoff from Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) in Indonesia. The aircraft entered into an uncontrolled dive and crashed into the Java Sea, killing all 189 passengers and crew.Then early Sunday morning, a second 737 MAX 8, en route to Nairobi (NBO) from Addis Ababa (ADD) with 149 passengers and eight crew members, crashed just six minutes after takeoff....

Talk about a tale of two airlines. Just a day after Delta announced that the ongoing government shutdown will cost it around $25 million in January alone, United president Scott Kirby presented a different point of view. Speaking on the airline’s Q4 2018 earnings call, he explained to analysts and media that business bookings during the first full week of a year — historically a great indicator of the economy’s strength — were way up....
