Could the end of listening to a TSA agent holler about taking liquids and laptops out of carry-ons be near? A new $96.8 million contract with Smiths Detection will enable the TSA to add 300 computed tomography (CT) scanners to airports nationwide starting this summer — definitely a step in the right direction.As we reported in July of last year, the TSA began testing the CT scanners at a handful of airports in 2017, eventually expanding the program to an additional 12 airports including Chicago O’Hare (ORD) and Los Angeles (LAX) in 2018....

Delta Air Lines has set the date for its last McDonnell Douglas MD-90 flight, marking the end of the venerable narrowbody aircraft family’s nearly six-decade run in the fleets of US carriers. The MD-90 is the last of the McDonnell Douglas single-aisle jetliners, heir to a tradition that stretched back to the 1960s.The carrier plans to retire its MD-90 fleet by the end of 2022, two years after it removes its last MD-88, its chief financial officer Paul Jacobson said recently....

During a hearing on Capitol Hill Wednesday, Chesley Sullenberger III said he had difficulty landing a Boeing 737 MAX simulator that was programmed to replicate failures similar to those that occurred on fatal flights in Ethiopia and Indonesia.“I recently experienced all these warnings in a 737 MAX flight simulator during recreations of the accident flights. Even knowing what was going to happen, I could see how crews could have run out of time before they could have solved the problems,” Sullenberger said to the panel....

Air France-KLM has announced that it will be swapping its remaining Boeing 787 and Airbus A350 orders. Currently, Air France operates a total of nine Boeing 787-9s, with one more scheduled to be delivered in May of 2020. Air France is also set to now add an additional 20 A350-900s to its fleet, an order that was originally slated for KLM. At the end of the delivery window, Air France’s A350-900 fleet will total 28 planes....

The number of major hotel brands who have renounced single-use toiletries just climbed to three.On Tuesday, Nov. 12, Hyatt announced it would be replacing miniature shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and lotion bottles with “large-format bath amenities.“The initiative, which will be “introduced as soon as possible” and no later than June 2021, will eliminate single-use bath products from all of the company’s more than 875 properties, including Park Hyatt, Grand Hyatt, Thompson Hotels and the all-inclusive Hyatt Zivas and Zilaras....

Amid a constant flurry of cost-cutting measures, budget airline Norwegian announced Tuesday it will stop all of its Caribbean routes by March 31.After a period of fast expansion, the now-cash-poor carrier has been recently on a mission to slow its growth and focus on turning a profit. Norwegian reported huge losses in 2018, totaling a net loss of 1.5 billion Norwegian kroner ($175 million USD).“Going into 2019, we will enter a period of slower growth and fewer investments, while constantly looking for new and smarter ways to improve our efficiency and offer new products and services to attract new customers,” Norwegian CEO Bjørn Kjos said on the airline’s earnings call....
