Orlando’s third airport, Melbourne, on the Atlantic coast of Florida, is getting its first international scheduled flights. Leisure carrier TUI Airways has announced that it will switch its Orlando operations from Sanford (SFB) to Melbourne (MLB) from 2022.These two airports may not be as familiar to some passengers as the city’s main Orlando International Airport (MCO), which is used by most international carriers like British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Norwegian. However, Sanford serves a number of UK destinations, all on TUI:Birmingham (BHX)Bristol (BRS)Doncaster/Sheffield (DSA)Edinburgh (EDI)Glasgow (GLA)London Gatwick (LGW)Manchester (MAN)Newcastle upon Tyne (NCL)Sanford is around 28 miles north of downtown Orlando, while Melbourne is about 70 miles from town, on the east side of the city....

Last October New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a $13 billion dollar overhaul to New York’s JFK Airport, and today major airlines and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey revealed details of how some of those renovations will look once they’re completed over the next seven years.For the last 50 years, British Airways has called New York’s JFK’s Terminal 7 its home base in the Big Apple. Over the last decade its invested more and more cash into the terminal and recently announced a $65 million injection in the dated building to update its lounges among other upgrades to the general terminal....

Over the past month, there have been large system outages at two of the largest airlines in the nation. Now, a couple of US Senators are demanding answers.Yesterday, Senators Richard Blumenthal and Edward Markey sent letters to the largest 13 US-based airlines asking what they’re doing to fix the problems causing these outages. A copy of the letter sent to Delta has been publicly posted (caution: PDF link).In addition to requesting information about the cause of past outages and back-up systems in place, the senators are also requesting answers to how airlines respond to such outages....

Southwest Airlines is beloved by flyers for allowing two free checked bags and not charging fare-change fees. It’s also famous for not assigning passengers seats.Even without charging these ancillary fees that are the basis of many other airlines’ profits, the budget carrier still raked in a cool $645 million from extra fees in 2018, according to a regulatory filing Southwest submitted last week. That’s a 13% jump over 2017 fee revenue....

Delta Air Lines will restart service to China on Thursday, adding flights between Seattle and Shanghai Pudong (PVG) with a crew stop at Seoul Incheon (ICN).The Atlanta-based airline will become the first U.S. carrier to return to China since flights were halted at the early onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in February. The Seattle-Shanghai flights will operate twice a week in June. Starting in July, Delta plans to operate one flight a week from Seattle and Detroit on Thursdays and Fridays respectively — also via Seoul....
