Indonesian authorities have elevated the threat level that Anak Krakatau poses to nearby communities and air traffic. The BBC reports that the disaster management agency in Indonesia (BNPB) has raised the alert from a level two to a level three, the second-highest level possible.The elevated alert comes amid increased volcanic activity at Anak Krakatau, a volcano located in the Sunda Strait, which caused last week’s fatal tsunami. In addition to a recently expanded (three-mile) exclusion zone around the volcano, flights in the region are being rerouted with concerns of additional airspace closures lingering....

The Japan Airlines pilot arrested for being nearly 10x over the legal alcohol limit has been sentenced to 10 months in jail.Pilot Katsutoshi Jitsukawa, who was arrested in October trying to board a Japan Airlines flight from Heathrow to Tokyo, said he had been “drinking heavily” the previous night, admitting to having had two bottles of wine and a pitcher of beer. His consumption put Jitsukawa’s blood alcohol level at 189mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, well above the stated limit for pilots of 20mg....

Dallas-based Greyhound is looking for a new leash.North America’s best-known intercity bus operator has been put up for sale by its current owner, FirstGroup, although the value of the brand is still nebulous. The British company, which purchased Greyhound in 2007 for $3.6 billion, is seeking to divest itself of its highway-dependent US investment as well as its UK spinoff brand, First Bus. Both brands face increasingly steep competition from budget carriers and have attracted the notice of shareholders concerned about profitability....

Icelandair made news last month when it announced plans to fly De Havilland Canada Dash 8 turboprop planes on two relatively long routes – for a turboprop, at least – from its main hub near Reykjavik.The flights from Reykjavik (KEF) to Manchester (MAN), England, and Dublin (DUB), Ireland, are scheduled to begin July 15.Here at TPG, that got us thinking. We wanted to see how those routes stacked up against other routes flown by the Dash 8 (formerly known as the Bombardier Q400)....

The Oneworld airline alliance may be about to gain a new member.The chief executive of Moroccan flag carrier Royal Air Maroc, Abdelhamid Addou, will be in New York for an event on Dec. 5, according to an emailed invitation from the airline — the same day that the Oneworld alliance holds a meeting of its governing board in the city. Neither the airline nor the alliance have issued any statements, but the CEO’s presence in New York is a strong hint that the African airline may be about to join....
