Lufthansa has revealed its newest business class product, which will let passengers choose perks or upgrades they want to pay for, the Australian Business Traveler reports. The new model for the cabin will be rolled out on the airline’s Boeing 777-9 aircraft, expected to be delivered in 2020.Unlike the new Emirates “Basic” Business class, which restricts features like lounge access from passengers, Lufthansa is not offering a discounted product. The airline says it will instead provide the same business class staples as before while allowing travelers to select additional options on top of their fare....

Subject to government approval, United will begin flying to Cape Town, South Africa (CPT), later this year. As of Tuesday, the airline’s latest planned route is now officially on sale, with the first flight scheduled to depart Newark (EWR) at 8:30pm on Dec. 15, 2019, on the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.As of now, United is showing the old 2-2-2 business-class configuration, but with retrofitted aircraft expected to enter service later this year, there’s a small chance that the new CPT nonstop will launch with Polaris seats, instead....

Virgin Atlantic founder Richard Branson said on Monday that the airline would not survive the coronavirus crisis if it didn’t get financial support from the government.“We will do everything we can to keep the airline going – but we will need government support to achieve that in the face of the severe uncertainty surrounding travel today and not knowing how long the planes will be grounded for,” Branson said in an open letter to Virgin employees....

I’ve heard stories for a couple years about Spirit Airlines passengers buying tickets for future trips at airport ticket counters to save money. This supposedly works because Spirit puts a ‘Passenger Usage Charge’ on tickets purchased online or over the phone, which it then has to pay a 7.5% federal excise tax on. Booking at the airport with a Spirit agent at the counter means passengers avoid the Usage Charge, and Spirit avoids paying the tax on that portion of the ticket....

Southwest Airlines announced 16 new daily nonstop routes on Thursday as the carrier extended its booking schedule into August.Included in the latest update are Southwest’s schedules for Houston Bush Intercontinental and Jackson, Mississippi – two cities it’s returning to after an extended absence – and a big expansion in Long Beach, California. Southwest also revealed new daily routes from Miami and Phoenix.Southwest’s service from Houston Bush Intercontinental (IAH) will begin April 12 with 18 daily round-trip flights to five nonstop destinations: Chicago Midway, Dallas Love, Denver, Nashville, New Orleans....

There are reports of an absolute nightmare of a flight stranding more than 180 Ryanair passengers heading from London-Stansted (STN) to Thessaloniki (SKG), Greece, overnight in Romania, according to the Independent. A delayed departure would end up being the least of the passengers’ concerns.As the flight neared Thessaloniki, fog blanketed the region, forcing the aircraft to divert. While there were dozens of potential diversion airports nearby, many of which are served by Ryanair, the crew appears to have taken direction from Ryanair operations to fly nearly 500 miles off course to land in a town in Romania....

Southwest Airlines has modified its schedule yet again to account for the imperiled 737 MAX now potentially grounded into August. That means that Southwest, the US carrier with the most MAX planes in its fleet (34 of the jet variants), now estimates that the plane will be grounded through the peak summer travel season.Although the airline has said that with the extension it can build its MAX-less schedule “well in advance in hopes to minimize the daily disruptions,” this change will no doubt leave some travelers in a lurch....
