When it comes to Canadian low-cost carriers, WestJet leads the pack. As the second largest airline in Canada (behind Air Canada), they service 71 destinations in Canada, US, Mexico and the Caribbean.Their operational model is similar to Southwest’s in that they only operate coach-only 737 aircraft. WestJet is not in any of the alliances, but they have flirted with partnerships in the past and most recently were rumored to link up with Southwest....

Airbus’s A380 program was dealt yet another blow this week as Qantas canceled a long-standing order for eight of the super jumbos. Recent months have seen the backlog of orders dwindling down as more airlines cancel orders. Airbus had netted only four orders for the A380 in the whole of 2018, a number that included Emirates’ lifeline order for the behemoth aircraft. Airbus delivered only 12 of the massive jets to operators in 2018....

United has confirmed that it will be reducing service from two major hubs to Sydney (SYD), impacting flights from both Houston (IAH) and Los Angeles (LAX) during the slower winter months in Australia. While the airline trimmed 787-9 Dreamliner service last summer as well, there are even more reductions for 2019.The airline will remove a total of one US round-trip each day from March 29 through October 25. Even with the change, United will fly two daily round-trips between the US and Sydney....

The airline announced an upcoming app update on Tuesday, August 13, stating that older versions of the United app would no longer support personal device entertainment after that date....

More and more Boeing 747s are disappearing from the skies. With demand falling, there is little need for an airplane that can fly 400 people, so airlines are announcing their retirement before they were originally planning to. First Dutch airline KLM and Australia’s Qantas said they would not fly again the 747s grounded due to the coronavirus; this week it was the turn of Virgin Atlantic. The list of airlines still flying the most iconic of airplanes is getting shorter....
