9 pm update: This afternoon, the NTSB stated that Jennifer Riordan from Albuquerque died from injuries sustained during the engine failure.Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 safely made an emergency landing in Philadelphia (PHL) around 11:30am Tuesday after an accident violently depressurized the plane.The Boeing 737-700 had just departed LaGuardia (LGA) for Dallas Love-Field (DAL) around 10:30 am, April 17, when the left engine suddenly gave way. A piece of shrapnel from the shredded engine hit and punctured one of the windows, injuring a female passenger who was “partially sucked out of the plane” by the pressure imbalance, according to another passenger’s father-in-law, Todd Baur....

It looks like duct tape, but it’s not duct tape, and it’s sometimes found on airplanes, where passengers have been known to snap photos of it just prior to flight. And usually, their reactions on social media are outraged: Why would an airline fix a plane with tape? Isn’t it dangerous?Then predictably, an image of its use flies around Twitter or Instagram, like this:But it’s not duct tape. It’s called speed tape....

Tuesday night was an incredible evening, as we launched the inaugural TPG Awards on the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. The lucky folks in attendance didn’t just get to see Leymah Gbowee, Captain “Sully” Sullenburger and Bebe Rexha; they also went home with gift bags. Start spreadin’ the news: All’Antico Vinaio, the iconic Italian street eatery that your friend who studied abroad in Florence still won’t shut up about, is coming to New York City for one month as a pop-up shop. This is the first time the Florentine panini spot will be expanding out of its native country, and owner Tommaso Mazzanti is excited to take the famous establishment to the Big Apple.“We will export the Florentine tradition to New York,” said Mazzanti in an interview with La Nazione Florence....

Maine was gearing up to have one of its slowest summers to date, with a mandatory 14-day quarantine discouraging out-of-state visitors, including those from a next-door neighbor with few coronavirus cases, Vermont.With an abundance of deals following the Maine governor’s earlier order, I booked an Airbnb near Acadia National Park for the entire month of August. My plan was to quarantine for the requisite 14 days, then enjoy life on an unseasonably quiet Mount Desert Island for the second half of the month....

View the current offers here.While the numerous cancellations in London Gatwick (LGW) from the continuing drone issue are getting most of the aviation news attention on Friday, blustery weather is putting a hamper on air travel in the Northeast US.According to FlightAware’s flight cancellation tracker as of 2:30pm Friday, 290 US flights have been cancelled so far for Friday and another 16 flights cancelled already for Saturday....

Australia’s largest airline, Qantas, has announced plans to implement much stricter enforcement of carry-on or hand luggage throughout the airline’s domestic network.To combat limited overhead bin space and the growing problem of passengers abusing carry-on luggage guidelines, Qantas will begin weighing and sizing each and every piece of hand luggage on domestic flights. As carry-on luggage has become the preferred way to transport bags for many passengers, airlines now face the problem of not having enough space in overhead bins for carry-on storage....

Last month, United Airlines rolled out its “CleanPlus” program. It included a number of initiatives aimed at improving health and safety, developed in partnership with Clorox and Cleveland Clinic. Now, the carrier is expanding its efforts, requiring passengers to acknowledge that they’re healthy and willing to comply with airline policies during the check-in process.All United passengers — including standby travelers — are now required to complete a health acknowledgement when they check in for their flight, similar to a policy currently in place with Frontier....

Whenever an airline reaches out with “changes” to a loyalty program, I get a sinking feeling in my stomach. United’s recent email was no exception, though my momentary unease was quickly put to rest.This week, United is introducing an entirely new currency, called PlusPoints. Unlike MileagePlus miles, which can be redeemed for flights, merchandise and other goodies, PlusPoints specifically cover upgrades, both on domestic and international flights, as loyalty chief Luc Bondar explained to Brian Kelly on today’s episode of Talking Points:This new currency will replace the existing Global Premier Upgrades (GPUs) and Regional Premier Upgrades (RPUs), though this change represents an improvement, overall....

Throughout this month, airlines have developed and evolved various measures to minimize the coronavirus risk for passengers and staff, from blocking the sale of middle seats — in Delta’s case — to contacting passengers and offering free changes ahead of full flights — in United’s.United Airlines still doesn’t have plans to limit the sale of seats onboard its flights, though the airline announced a number of other new policies and procedures on Wednesday morning that are part of an effort to improve safety without taking a significant financial hit....
