We recommend you use Google Flights to find dates to fly, then book through an online travel agency, such as Orbitz or Expedia, which allows you to cancel flights without penalty by 11pm Eastern Time within one day of booking. However, if you’re using the American Express Platinum Card, you’ll need to book directly with the airline or through Amex Travel portal to get 5x MR points. Remember: Fares may disappear quickly, so book right away and take advantage of Orbitz or Expedia’s courtesy cancellation if you’re unable to get the time away from work or family.Tired of all of the cheap economy deal alerts? Qatar flights from other US gateways are served by Qatar’s 777, which is arranged 2-2-2 in business class. While you could still expect the service and food/drink to be top-notch on the 777 routes, the A350 hard product certainly trumps the 777.Sign up for our daily newsletterEmail addressSign upI would like to subscribe to The Points Guy newsletters and special email promotions. Using the Qatar Airways AAdvantage chart, this route will earn you 23,433 EQMs and 3,124 EQDs for the $1,935 all-in cost. As $127 of the price is taxes and fees, you’d only get 1,808 EQDs from a similar purchase on AA flights.Maximize Your PurchaseDon’t forget to use a credit card that earns additional points on airfare purchases, such as the American Express Platinum Card (5x on flights booked directly with airlines or American Express Travel), Chase Sapphire Reserve, or Citi Prestige (3x on airfare) or the Chase Sapphire Preferred (2x on all travel purchases).
