See privacy policy.About 750 passengers and staff evacuated Rome’s Ciampino International Airport (CIA) Thursday after three undischarged bombs were found during on-site construction work. The explosives are believed to be leftover from World War II.Flights scheduled to land or depart from CIA have been momentarily delayed, diverted and canceled following the discovery of the bombs. Passengers, who were not initially told why they were evacuated, were instructed to wait outside the airport. Spectators said that the ordeal generally elicited little alarm.“I was eating my lunch inside the main building when the restaurant manager said everyone had to leave,” Donato Eramo, a rescue helicopter technician stationed at the airport, told The Local. “People just left their food and went outside. There was no panic.“A bomb squad has since been sent to the airport to remove the three explosives from the premises. However, the airport isn’t expected to reopen until 6pm local time on Thursday.Rome’s Ciampino airport is Italy’s tenth busiest airport. It is also the home base of the Italian Air Force’s 31st Wing, the squad that transports Italian government officials like the president, prime minister and cabinet ministers, as well as ferries the Pope around on its two AW139 helicopters.
